Gullivers Travels Review

Winner of the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize, Gullivers travels to a "fairytale-esque" version of Earth, "a land not so different from our own, yet somehow richer and more magical". The premise is simple: life imitates art - but not always in a way we'd expect. Time is distorted and strange events take place in strange places. What follows is a novel I would classify as surreal: a remarkable novel, with great characters, an excellent plot and one that deserves the accolades it has received.

The story begins in 16th century France, where the story's main characters, Gulliver (nicknamed Worm), and his faithful sidekick, Bottom, have been sent on a wild goose chase on behalf of King Louis XIV. A rather unlikely pair of travellers cross the country and encounter many obstacles along the way, including a bear and a leopard. They eventually reach the kingdom of Wonderland, where they meet the beautiful Queen Morbucks, who grants them entrance. But before they can enter, the queen is kidnapped by the evil Captain Hook and taken to the dreaded dungeon. From there, things become more difficult and strange.

It's not just the setting that makes this novel special. The novel's main theme is the importance of friendship and the dangers of hatred. Gulliver and Bottom are separated due to a bitter war, and they find themselves adrift in a strange new world, where they're not quite human. There are some truly charming, touching moments in Gullivers travels, and it's easy to become absorbed by the storyline.

This novel is available to buy online. A quick internet search will bring thousands of reviews and white papers from around the world. Most will be positive, but there will be some negative ones too. It's worth remembering that not every review is a genuine review. I've often seen websites that offer "honest" Gullivers travel reviews, offering only a synopsis and a few negative points about the novel.

My own feeling about Gullivers is that it's a hugely rewarding novel. The whole concept is ingenious and the end result is simply fantastic. In addition to the book itself, Gullivers DVDs, DVD movies and video games are also available. While I haven't read the novel itself, I have watched it a couple of times and I can vouch for the engrossing story and the beautiful illustrations. I'm looking forward to more books from author Peter V Brett and hope that he keeps us in stitches with Gullivers.

A quick word about the price. As it's a visual medium, the book is available for a reasonable price - not cheap by any means. But it's a worthwhile investment and I'm sure you'll agree once you've started enjoying Gullivers travels. The main characters shine though, in what is one of the most endearing stories I've read in a long time. A must for any fan of this fabulous genre.
